Why a catalog needs a watermark

Everything on SiftFox is public on purpose. We want search engines and AI assistants to read it, quote it and send people here - that is what a directory is for, and our robots.txt invites them in by name.

The cost of being readable is being copyable. A catalog can be lifted wholesale by anyone with an afternoon and a script, republished under a different name, and there is usually no way to prove where it came from. Descriptions are facts about other people’s products; rankings are numbers. Nothing in them carries a signature.

So one listing carries one

A single entry in this catalog describes a product that does not exist, in a sentence that appears nowhere else on the internet. It says so in its own description, and its website link brings you here. Nobody is being sold anything - there is nothing to sign up for and no address to give.

If that sentence ever turns up on somebody else’s domain, a search alert tells us the day it is indexed, with their URL and a date. A copy that includes it is a copy of this catalog and not a coincidence.

What this is not

It is not a trick played on readers - you are reading the explanation right now, linked from the listing itself. It is not a paid placement and it holds no ranking position: it sits at the bottom of its category with no boosts, because nobody has any reason to boost it. And it is not an attempt to stop anyone reading the catalog. Reading is free. Republishing it as your own is what the Terms of Use speak to.
